A Light exists in Spring
Not present on the Year
At any other period —
When March is scarcely here

A Color stands abroad
On Solitary Fields
That Science cannot overtake
But Human Nature feels.

It waits upon the Lawn,
It shows the furthest Tree
Upon the furthest Slope you know
It almost speaks to you.

Then as Horizons step
Or Noons report away
Without the Formula of sound
It passes and we stay —

A quality of loss
Affecting our Content
As Trade had suddenly encroached
Upon a Sacrament.

-Emily Dickinson

What does that second to last line mean . . . “as trade had suddenly encroached.” I know poems aren’t always meant to be figured out, but it seems significant and I don’t get it. Also, someone once told me that most of Emily Dickinson’s poems can be recited to the tune of the Gilligan’s Island theme song. Try it.

    • Hey! Did you have any ideas?

The way I read it, and maybe this poem should’ve been posted at the end of spring, but she describes the beautiful change in season that we love. One day a trade encroaches (interrupts) that we can’t stop, and it …well, sucks:) Which I know I feel! We get so little weather here that when we do, I get excited…then I wake up the next day and it’s gone.

too bad about that song thing…;) I hadn’t heard that!

I read “Trade” as business (or busy-ness) interrupting the the sacred appreciation of beauty, silence and solitude. And thanks so much, jason. i will never be able to read dear Emily again without that wretched tune popping into my head!

Stella and Maisy are amazing. I follow them on you tube and started recording Nashville just because of them. I was AMAZED when they played this together. Could they be anymore talented?

    • ..They really are… I love their version of this song! Not just because they are young and it’s a novelty, I actually really enjoy the sound if that makes sense!
PS Nashville is getting good again- I just want Rayna and Deacon to get together!!!
